Why animals go viral on the net

From LOLcats to the infamous honey badger, animal content has come to dominate viral media, and there are plenty of reasons why.

The human brain has a very distinct way of reacting to pictures of animals, differing from how it responds to people, places, or objects (which, cute kittens aside, explains why a photo of an anaconda scares the hell out of you too).

And while you may think of viral content as a time-waster, studies say that looking at pictures of animals at work can actually make you more productive by promoting inbuilt focusing capacities in the brain.

Combine these innate animal affinities with the amount of time we spend online, and it’s easy to see why animals and the Internet are a killer combination.
